Saturday’s Green and Gold game saw the emergence of three solid quarterbacks for the 2010 Tribe football team. Leading the way was junior transfer Mike Paulus. Arriving from the University of North Carolina over the off season, Paulus put together a solid performance with 37 yards and a touchdown pass. Following Paulus was last year’s back up was junior Terrance Schmand, who completed 7 of 9 for 79 yards. Fans also caught a glimpse of highly touted freshman Brent Caprio. Caprio was 9 for 15, racking up 87 yards. The game also provided a canvas for sophomore receiver CJ Thomas to dazzle the crowd. Thomas showcased blazing speed in catching four passes for 60 yards and also scored on a 13 yard end around run.
As the day wound to a close, the team announced their off season John A Stewart Winter Warrior award, which is awarded for the hardest working player through the off season workouts. This award was granted to senior defensive tackle Michael Stover. Stover looks to anchor a defensive line that lost two of its starters from last season.
After Stover received his award, the team announced its’ captains for the 2010 season. On the defensive side of the ball, senior cornerback Ben Cottingham, senior linebacker Evan Francks and junior linebacker Jake Trantin will be wearing the C. Their offensive counterparts will be senior tackle Keith Hill Jr. and senior running back Courtland Marriner. These five players will lead the Tribe as they attempt to duplicate their great results from last season.
All in all, the Tribe showcased a ton of talent, and it should be a fun team to watch in the 2010 season!
