William and Mary Men’s Soccer finished their exhibition season Friday night with a win, defeating the Liberty Flames 2-0. The team, led by captains Andrew McAdams ’10 and Michael DiNuzzo ’11, took on the Flames in Lynchburg. Junior Nicolas Abrigo ’12 put William and Mary on the board late in the first half with a penalty kick, resulting from a foul in the box by freshman John Ciampa ’14. In the second half, junior James Lofton ’12 scored on a long shot, bringing the final score to 2-0. This is the team’s second shut-out of the exhibition season.

Last year, the team finished their season 13-5-1, registering the most wins for the men’s team since 2002. They boasted a winning percentage of .711, which ranked 21st in the country, and were ranked 12th in the nation in scoring offense.

Despite the loss of several key players, namely CAA Player of the Year Andrew Hoxie, Head Coach Chris Norris is confident in his team. Read More

The 2010 William and Mary football team will begin the season this Saturday with its’ first of three road trips to New England. First stop- Amherst, Massachusetts to take on the U. Mass. Minutemen. As there are two divisions to the Colonial Athletic Association, (North and South) teams from opposite divisions do not meet annually. In the case of UMass, it was 2007 when these two teams last played, with the Minutemen upstaging the Tribe at Zable stadium, 48-34. In the 11 game history between the schools, UMass leads the series 7-4. While that may give Tribe fans cause for concern, worry not… the programs over the last three years have each changed dramatically.

The Tribe

Last year, William and Mary had one of the most prolific defenses in the country. Led by Adrian Tracy, and Sean Lissemore, the Tribe’s defense limited all opponents to a combined total of less than 1000 yards rushing, while Jonathan Grimes had over 1200 himself. Offensively, William and Mary was also quite effective under the leadership of Senior QB R.J. Archer. Archer completed over 60% of his passes, with 16 passing touchdowns. As mentioned, Jonathan Grimes had a devastating impact on opponents defenses, and with he and Cortland Mariner back this season, there is reason to be optimistic that the running game will pick up where it left off.

The Tribe does have a few question marks this season. Tracy and Lissemore were drafted in the NFL. Archer and CB David Caldwell were also picked up by NFL teams. While this could present a few difficulties for most coaches, good recruiting and training over the years has assured a depth to the team so William and Mary will reload rather than rebuild. While I have not seen a proclamation as to who the starting quarterback will be, transfer Mike Paulus and redshirt freshman Brent Caprio will be at the top of the group of eight Quarterbacks on the roster. Overall I think William and Mary can be at least as good as last year’s team that went to the National semi finals. No doubt they will be a force to be reckoned with in the conference and beyond.

The Minutemen

After finishing a disappointing 5-6 last season, UMass enters this season facing very difficult competition right off of the bat. After opening at home against #4 William and Mary, they play host to the Holy Cross Crusaders (ranked T-25th in the FCS coaches poll) and then take to the road, traveling to Ann Arbor Michigan to take on the Michigan Wolverines…. That’s right! The Big House! (Hail to the Victors…Yes that University of Michigan)

At the UMass media day, coach Kevin Morris described his team as “a very young team overall, but looking to mature by week one”. Coach Morris looks for the transfers picked up from Northeastern and Hofstra (both schools dropped football after last season) to provide experience and guidance for the younger players. While he realizes that his team is lacking experience, he is confident in his starting quarterback Kyle Havens, and tailbacks John Griffin and John Hernandez. These three may prove to be the beacon of hope in a season with a bleak outlook.

With youth being so prevalent, look for the Minutemen to have many long uphill battles this season beginning with #4 William and Mary.

My Prediction-
William and Mary 33
University of Massachusetts 10

The clock struck midnight 60 minutes too early for Tribe Football, as the fairy-tale season ended in cruel fashion on a frigid Philadelphia Friday night last December. The team suffered a heartbreaking one point loss, 14-13, in the National Semifinals to Villanova, the eventual FCS Champions. However, as a long summer draws to an end and students return to campus, a shot at redemption beckons for a new Tribe team this fall.

While the loss of 10 starters, including defensive leaders Sean Lissemore (’10) and Adrian Tracy (’10), to the NFL Draft will be difficult to overcome, the Tribe will return 12 total starters and has already garnered national attention.

I love sports. I love the warm excitement of the beginning of a game, when anything can happen and even the least successful of teams can maintain optimism. I love the way time seems to stop in the split second of calm before the climactic action, and the thrilling celebration or sinking of the heart right afterwards. I loved participating on the field in my younger years, and now that my athleticism can no longer quite keep pace with my spirit, I love watching from the sideline and rooting my team on to victory with all I’ve got.

There are lots of people like me on the William and Mary campus. Come to Zable Stadium any given Saturday when the football team is in town, and you are bound to see a sizable contingent of Tribe faithful in the student section. They will have hair dyed green, and will be on their feet and going hoarse from voicing their support for the team on every snap. When basketball season rolls around, the faithful fans line the seats of Kaplan Arena next to the Pep Band, living and dying with every shot off the hands of a William and Mary player. In the spring, the bleachers of Plumeri Park are sprinkled with fans cheerfully heckling the opposing players and umpires.Nobody who has ever been to a William and Mary sporting event would question the existence of these Tribe fanatics. Here’s the thing, though: even if you aren’t one of these people, it is well worth your time to come out and support our athletes.
